The first Asian Games were held in New Delhi (India) in 1951 at the proposal of India after World War II as an all-round athletic event for Asian countries. The Asian Olympic Council holds the games every four years in the middle year of the Olympics (abbreviated as the Asian Games). The field hockey event serves as the continental qualifier for the Olympics, and the winning country qualifies for the Paris Olympics.
